Last Friday night...now I'm not gonna continue with a Katy Perry song however I am going tell you about my Friday night. Last Friday night I went to a concert.
The bands... The Defiled, The Plot In You, Like Moths To Flames, & the headliner Scranton, PA's own Motionless In White.
This show held a lot of meaning to me. Not only because I knew & liked three of the four bands playing but because of the venue. Mr. Small's Fun House in Millvale, Pa. This was were I went to my very first concert back in November, 2011. The tour lineup then was Tonight Alive, Chunk! No Captain Chunk!, Motionless In White, The Word Alive, & BlessTheFall. So seeing MIW for the first time then & seeing them perform for a second time while also being my second time at Mr. Smalls was pretty symbolic.
Mr. Smalls Fun House is a renovated church. Very funny that it's a church if you think about it. The venue is decently sized with a BAR adjacent to the stage & a balcony above it for viewing. The crowd filled the wooden floor before the stage. With little room to approach the merch tables to left & right sides of the stage.
SOLD OUT!!! The first show of the Motionless In White tour & it completely sold out! So cool to be apart of that. The bands were very pleased with us fans as they performed, thanking us for coming & selling the venue out. Now to get to the show.
The first band to take the stage played at this years Soundwave Festival were Motionless In White asked them to join their tour in the states.
Now imagine if Motionless In White, Asking Alexandria, & Bullet For My Valentine got together & had one giant band threesome. The product of that threesome would be the quintet known as The Defiled. From London, England this popular UK band infected the crowd with curiosity of what was to come as they took the stage. Ready to be remembered & deliver what would truly be an impressive show The Defiled showed why they're taking over the British Metal scene. Lead Singer Stitch D projected vocals that I thought sounded familiar but also very intense, roaring & unique. Backing vocals & programming were performed by The AVD. I've NEVER seen anyone do flip tricks with a keyboard & continue playing as if it were nothing but AVD surely pulled it off & definitely left me in awe. With crushing guitar riffs, heavy metal drumbeats & peaceful electronics intertwined, The Defiled gave a performance that would leave a mark on the Pittsburgh music scene. Be sure to check these guys out soon! Their sophomore album "Daggers" is out now.
Next up was personal favorite of mine. The Plot In You. This was my second time seeing these guys. If you know this band or have heard of them you should know what to expect when they hit the stage. As lead singer Landon Tewers approached the mic you could see the anger upon his face. Landon's vocals can only be described as vicious. Even without the mic to his mouth you could hear him scream over the crowd before him. As I have said before & I'll say it multiple times again; I love when a band gets into their music. This shows when The Plot In You performs live. I guess it has to since their music is so full of emotion. Stalking from one side of the stage to the other, the look in Landon's eyes matched the tone of his songs. Supported by prominent strums of the bass guitar by Ethan Yoder & heavy guitar riffs delivered by Josh Childress, the sound emitted from the stage was full of malevolent & sadistic rage.
After the show I got a chance to speak with Landon. I asked him for some vocal tips & explained to him what I thought his vocals were like.
"To me, the only way to describe your vocals & stage presence in one word is, Murderous." I told him. "You look so full of anger & pent up rage!"
"Yeah. That's what it is though. It really helps when I go on stage pissed off about something. Like today conveniently, I was mad about something before our set & getting up there & performing to songs like ours really helps relieve the anger. It's very therapeutic." He explained.
I'll have more on The Plot In You later as I have them on my list of Album reviews.
To the next band. Like Moths To Flames. These guys put on a great show. Very simple ways to describe the sound of LMTF. Malicious, intense, fast paced, & I don't give a fuck what you think! That's the kind of vibe you get when hearing these guys perform. When you go to a concert you all go for the music, that's a given. Whether you find yourself bouncing when the singer says, headbanging or even when you mosh, you're doing it to the music. Now you could be the conservative type to just stand there & watch but if you are, this band will change that. Chris Roetter takes the stage & makes the atmosphere fun & vibrant. Taking the role of a true metal head leader getting the crowd to jump & mosh at his command. The intensity of LMTF's set had everyone's heart beating faster. The crowd was heated & with all the jumping, moshing, & headbanging you would expect they would be exhausted. This was not the case.
Finally we have the the headliner. Motionless In White. Everyone was ready for them. The stage was empty & the lights were out. The room fell silent & everyone remained anxious. The appearance of this band always fascinates me. This time the bassist Devin "Ghost" Sola especially. He wore an outfit very similar to BeetleJuice. Obviously that's what he was going for. Although it does seem as though every tour he goes for a Tim Burton character style. It's always very kool too see. Guitarist Ricky Horror & Ryan Sitkowski had their own looks as well. I could not tell if Ryan had actual stitches on his lips or they were drawn on from were I was standing. It looked twisted though. That's what they go for though. They deliver not only a great musical performance but also have a visually stunning choice of costume that matches their music perfectly.
"Pittsburgh! Are you ready!?" Screamed lead singer Chris Motionless. The crowd roared in response. As they took the stage the lights flickered on & off, mist rose, & the crowd condensed more toward the stage. The band began their set. With dark powerful lyrics full of meaning & motivation to be yourself & quite frankly a Marilyn Manson-esqe sound to them MIW put on an amazing day one show to kick off their North-American tour. They will be joined by For The Fallen Dreams on a later date as The Plot In You ends their leg of the tour. You can catch Motionless In White on this years Van's Warped Tour.
